Barsey Rhododendron sanctuary: Trekking in Paradise
By Divyakshi Gupta
Imagine walking through a colourful palette of pink, red, white, watching thirteen different species of rhododendrons bloom.
Imagine walking through dense forests of bamboo, fir and oak full of chirping birds.
Imagine waking up to unparalleled views of the Kanchenjunga.
Trekking through this Sanctuary in Sikkim is a moderate 5 day trek that begins at Hilley in West Sikkim.
If you are lucky you will see different shades and varieties of Rhodos.
Though you can visit part of this sanctuary as a day visit, the real beauty lies in going deeper.
The joy lies in camping in open meadows, near gurgling streams.
The best time to visit this sanctuary is March- May when Rhodos are in full bloom.
Highly recommend you to do this trek with Kipepeo: a sustainable travel company who conducts treks in North Eastern India.
This offbeat trek in a lesser known destination is perfect for those looking beyond the obvious, check out my other stories!
