Bateshwar Temple complex: Risen from Ruins
By Divyakshi Gupta
Bateshwar temple complex in Morena district, Chambal in Madhya Pradesh has a restoration story like none other.
Amidst miles of barren lands, this temple complex is a unique find.
This cluster of 200 temples was restored by ASI led by Mr. KK Muhammad with the help of Chambal dacoits.
And the temples were reconstructed like a jigsaw puzzle.
Showing the early stages of temple art, they are stated to belong to the 6th-9th Century.
While most of the temples are not functional, there is one functional Shiva temple in the complex.
The entire cluster of temples bears an uncanny resemblance to the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Bateshwar brings alive a mysterious reality of how the past breathes even in the present.
