Inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Mumbai
BY DIVYAKSHI GUPTA
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai is a heritage building and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Designed by the British architect Mr. F.W Stevens, this building is an exemplary example of Victorian revival architecture.
The building has elements of Indian Palace architecture style: The impressive stone dome, the pointed arches, the turrets.
The entire building is not open to the public, but thanks to a special heritage walk, I got to see the gorgeous interiors of the building.
Once you enter the main door, you enter the Grand staircase block! This is right underneath the giant dome and there are several staircases here.
The giant dome is said to be the first octagonal ribbed masonry dome that was built in the Italian gothic style.
The adjacent walls have latticed windows flanked by granite pillars and stained glass windows which are another feature of Gothic architecture.
The arched windows are flanked by corridors which have Minton floorings. These are mostly found in several buildings of this era.
It is truly a delight to be able to witness the not so accessible parts of this heritage building. Follow my stories for more such architectural gems!
