Garhi Padhavali: Hidden gem of Chambal
By Divyakshi Gupta
In the Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh, there are several lesser known architectural wonders away from the tourist eye.
Garhi Padhavali, 35 Kms from Gwalior, is one of them.
This monument is a temple in ruins, built approximately in the 10th century.
Later this temple was fortified by the rulers of Jat Ratnas of Gohad in the 19th century and one can see the fort walls.
The temple is believed to have been dedicated to Lord Siva, as evident from the huge Nandi found in the temple ruins.
Inside the temple are intricate carvings and ornate sculptures of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and scenes of Hindu Puranas.
The temple complex is small but well maintained by the Archaeological Society Of India (ASI).
The ancient sculptures found from the temple ruins are exhibited in the passage leading to the temple.
