Kankanmath: The ancient Lego styled temple

By Divyakshi Gupta

About 65 kms from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh is the magnificent temple of Kankanmath.

The temple lies in the village Sihoniya and is surrounded by endless fields.

The super imposing building can be seen from a distance with stones stacked over each other, making it look like a lego structure.

The temple was built by a Kushawaha ruler King Kirtiraj of the Kachapaghata dynasty in the 10th century.

No lime is used in the construction and slabs are placed strategically over each other, which makes one wonder how it is still standing tall.

This intricately carved temple is 115 feet tall and the main deity is Lord Shiva.

Restoration work is going on under the guidance of ASI to prevent the structure from falling.

There is a carved gateway at the entrance and a few ruins scattered in the complex

The temple can be reached after a one hour drive from the Agra-Gwalior highway but the location is very isolated.

Despite the difficulty in reaching this place, the sheer architectural brilliance makes your efforts worth the visit.
