The Royal Cenotaphs of Bhuj
By Divyakshi Gupta
In the heart of Bhuj, the Royal Chattardis glisten in the afternoon sun.
These were built in the 18th century by the Jadeja Rulers.
The architectural style of these Chattardis is a combination of Rajputana and Mughal architecture.
These umbrella shaped dome structures are fine examples of red sandstone carving.
The largest cenotaph is of Rao Lakpatji and it is highly ornamental.
It is believed that 15 of his wives gave up their lives at his funeral pyre.
The best time to visit these Chattardis is during the sunset.
The 2001 earthquake caused tremendous damage to this monument and several cenotaphs crumbled.
These Chattardis truly give a spectacular insight into the architecture and history of the Jadeja rulers.
