The original fortification was constructed under Nuno-da-Cunha in 1535 AD The fort was rebuilt by the Viceroy D. Jao-De-Castro after 1546 AD.

The citadel is protected by the sea on three sides and on the land side by a deep moat cut through solid rock.

The fortress had facilities for storage of arms, ammunition, rations and water to withstand any kind of siege.

Visiting the Diu fort takes about 2 hours and one can see the whole city from the top.

There is information in Braille for the visually impaired.
