It was one of those cold January mornings in Bomdila when the mountains disappear behind clouds and mist wraps around the town like a shawl. I pulled back the curtains for gorgeous views of the Himalayas. My room at Bomdila Embassy was delightfully warm, thanks to an electric blanket and heater—a level of comfort I hadn’t expected in this quaint town of Arunachal Pradesh. But the real warmth, I quickly discovered, wasn’t from the amenities. It came from the people.

Nestled high on a hill overlooking Bomdila town, Bomdila Embassy doesn’t feel like a hotel. From the outside, it resembles a Bhutanese Dzong—elegant, sturdy, and perched on a hill. Enter the wooden door and you’re welcomed not into a hotel lobby, but a home. An open kitchen abuzz with activity, a smiling Rinchen making Baale, a shy Raju and an ever smiling Sange, the owner of Bomdila Embassy and the host.
It doesn’t feel like a hotel. But the classy, chic interiors and the handpicked decor makes you feel like you’re in an elegant hotel. Unlike the monotonous chain hotels that often lack character, this family run property, a classic blend of modernity, while retaining the local flavour of Arunachal, making Bomdila Embassy—a boutique stay, in the truest sense of the term.

What is a Boutique Stay?
Think of a boutique stay as cozy, stylish properties that offer more than just comfort—they offer character.
With only a handful of rooms, these small, unique accommodations are all about making you feel special and at home, where guests are treated as cherished visitors, not just check-ins. Think thoughtfully done local décor, personalized service, local experiences and hosts who genuinely care.
Why Bomdila Deserves a Stop?
Many travelers make the mistake of heading straight from Guwahati to Tawang, skipping Bomdila entirely. But this tranquil hill town is not only a cultural gem—home to beautiful monasteries, traditional arts and crafts, and a vibrant local market—but also a vital acclimatization stop before visiting the high-altitude Sela Pass (13,700 ft).
Spend a day exploring the GRL Monastery, drop by the lesser-known but beautiful Upper Gompa, soak in the scenic views and immerse yourself in the culture of West Kameng district. Detailed blog post of Things to do in Bomdila coming soon.
It is best to halt for at least two nights at Bomdila before heading to Tawang.
What sets Bomdila Embassy apart?
Blend of modernity with homeliness:
Every room at Bomdila Embassy is tastefully done—minimal yet warm, with wooden floors, soft lighting, and locally inspired art. The bathrooms are sleek and modern, and each room has a private balcony with unrestricted views of the Bomdila valley. On clear days, you can see snow-clad peaks too.
There are just four rooms—two on the ground floor, two upstairs—all priced at ₹7,000 per night including breakfast. Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with a friend, Bomdila Embassy offers both twin and double-bed options, extra bed option available for families.
While you get all the comforts of a hotel, you have the privilege to be hosted at a local home in Arunachal. So there is a welcoming feeling of being a guest that is different from being just a ‘customer’. There is friendly chatter at the meals, where you interact with Sange’s family as well as the other guests. A great way to exchange travel notes. It is like the best of both the worlds: hotels + Homestays!

A Taste of Local Monpa Cuisine
Meals here are memorable. Breakfasts of Shakshuka (a house favorite) are followed by steaming cups of Tibetan Butter tea. Dinners often feature Monpa delicacies you’d never find on a restaurant menu—like Aloo Phing (glass noodles with potatoes), fermented Tingmo buns, Laipata (a local spinach dish) grown in their home garden, fermented soybean and chilly chutney called Chamin and sweet dishes like ‘Desi’, made from rice and made on special occasions. At Bomdila Embassy, we three got to taste authentic vegetarian food of Arunachal.
Sange’s sister often cooks for the guests, and her warm smile, along with the open kitchen layout, makes meals feel like family gatherings.
Location :
Bomdila Embassy is away from the crowded main town, making it a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle, yet accessible enough for day explorations.

Because of its vantage location it offers unparalled views of the entire valley. A 5 min short walk away brings you to a small, lesser known monastery: Its a perfect serene way to start your mornings in Bomdila and also a great viewpoint especially for epic sunsets.
A Knowledgable host who is also a tour operator:
Sange Tshering isn’t just the host of Bomdila Embassy—he’s the founder of Holiday Scout, a responsible travel company dedicated to showcasing the cultural richness of Northeast India. As a local of Bomdila, his knowledge is encyclopedic and his enthusiasm is contagious.

He often joins guests for meals, offers insider tips on the best local experiences, and can arrange excursions to nearby villages like Shergaon and Morshing. If you’re lucky, he might even take you to one of the traditional Chham performances his company helps promote—a mesmerizing showcase of the tribal dances of West Kameng district.

Personalised care :
Sange’s family treats guests with care and attention, taking care of tiny details like hot water to carry enroute, promptly making garlic water as a preventive measure for AMS, switching on the heater of the room a little before our arrival so the room was warm and cozy.
There’s something deeply heartwarming about the way you’re treated at Bomdila Embassy.
When we got ready to leave for Tawang, after three very comfortable nights in Bomdila, it actually felt like I was leaving home.
Sange’s entire family came to see us off and as we were leaving, Sange’s mom tied a white scarf (Khata) around our necks, a traditional gesture of good luck and safe travels. Such a warm, pure gesture that only reinstated what I was feeling.
As our car pulled away, prayer flags fluttered in the wind. I looked back at Bomdila Embassy—half Dzong, half home—and whispered a silent promise to return.
If you’re headed to Arunachal Pradesh, do yourself a favor: pause here, breathe deeply, and let the mountains welcome you home. (Thank me later!)
